Day sail from Sausalito in Stray Cat, Catalina 320 with 32 feet length overall. Role: Skipper. Crew: 1 experienced, and 3 people entirely new to sailing. Calm conditions in the morning. 20 knots of sustained wind in the afternoon. We motored under the Golden Gate bridge to start the day, and sailed back-and-forth on the far side on a beam reach. This helped the crew get some practice tacking under light wind conditions. The tide soon pushed us back inland and toward the South tower of the bridge and the buoy underneath it. We quickly tacked away and headed back into the bay sailing on a broad reach. We rounded Alcatraz island, and sailed toward San Francisco city. By now, the wind had picked up. Rather than sail around Angel island (as was our original intention) and lose the wind, we chose to just sail back upwind the way we came toward Sausalito. This was a fun and delightful sail. Docking under high wind conditions was a bit challenging, and we had to abandon our first attempt, do a standing turn, exit the marina, and then try again.
